The SPI directs the Department of Education and oversees TK-12 public schools, manages state funding directed to local school districts, and enforces education regulations and law. In 2012, he won a seat representing Southeast Los Angeles County in the Assembly and in 2016 was elected by his colleagues to serve as Speaker of the Assembly.As Speaker from 2016 to 2023, Anthony led during a historic time for&nbsp;California’s schools. As executive director of Plaza de la Raza Child Development Services, he oversaw programs serving more than 2,300 children across 35 child development centers located throughout Los Angeles County, providing comprehensive early education, health, and family support services to underserved communities.Later, Rendon pivoted to politics – motivated to run for the state legislature to reverse severe budget cuts to early childhood education programs imposed during Governor Schwarzenegger’s tenure. In 2012, he won a seat representing Southeast Los Angeles County in the Assembly and in 2016 was elected by his colleagues to serve as Speaker of the Assembly.As Speaker from 2016 to 2023, Rendon led during a historic time for California’s schools. We’re already seeing how colleges are dealing with kids writing their papers on ChatGPT, meaning they’re not developing the critical thinking skills needed for life.

Getting kids off to the right start is key to them succeeding the rest of their lives. I spent the first two decades of my career, where I too often saw the California Department of Education be a hindrance rather than a help. When I was speaker, I convened a Blue Ribbon Commission on Early Childhood Education that made a number of recommendations for how we restructure the ways California runs its preschool and early education programs. Among my priorities are:<ul><li>Expand access to affordable child care for working families. </li><li>Ensure fair, competitive pay for providers and teachers to attract and retain early learning professionals. </li><li>Invest in training and education for both new and existing child care providers. </li><li>Strengthen our child care infrastructure by growing the workforce and improve affordability and accessibility for families. </li><li>Enable parents to work while their children are cared for in safe, developmentally supportive environments. </li><li>Support California’s economy, which depends on reliable child care for working families. </li><li>Prepare children for school with early learning programs that ensure kindergarten readiness.</li></ul>
